Bringing Digital Literacy and Safety to Immigrant Communities through Community-Based Design Processes

Advances in technology, digital technology and human-computer interaction are being created and deployed at a tremendous rate, have changed our society and interactions, and have arguably brought benefits into our lives. Many of these advances are possible because a large proportion of the communities in which they are deployed are tech-savvy, wired, or competent technology users. However, many groups of individuals are completely unaware of and unprepared for these basic digital skills that have become ubiquitous in many parts of our lives. Thus, these groups of people are being left out of discussions and opportunities that arise from being part of the digital community. This project is a bridging platform where it engages with such a group of individuals, immigrants in our case, and supports their learning of digital skills, motivating them through practical demonstrations. It also provides them with a self-paced learning platform to learn and practice basic digital skills and safe digital practices with Information and Communication Technologies (ICTs). The goal of this training is to empower them and elevate their digital skills so that they can achieve greater mobility in a technology-driven society and economy. The training was created using a community-driven participatory design process involving community members and leaders in designing the materials. This process lays a groundwork for how future interventions of this sort can be created for other groups.
